Psychotherapy

It’s a peculiar thing, psychotherapy. Two strangers come together to enter unknown territory with no particular map of how, or even if, healing and growth will occur. Feelings flow, or maybe they don’t. Ideas, memories, and silences appear, adding contour. So we follow the terrain that presents in the space between patient (you) and therapist (me). We may find unexpected personal truths, falsehoods, excitement, dread, frustration, worry, sadness, joy, rage, gratitude, numbness, nothingness, not enough-ness, too much-ness … And so it goes.

In this way, each therapy becomes customized towards identifying and relieving unique forms of pain and/or obstacles to more satisfied living. Some wounds and roadblocks are obvious in nature, so simply talking out solutions in more detail is the extent of what’s needed. Sometimes internal suffering is much more nebulous or deeply entrenched, so a more thorough exploratory process is necessary.

While session frequency is typically once per week, it’s not unusual to increase or decrease meetings as needed, or wanted for that matter. In cases where the treatment is deepening and patients want more extensive psychological pursuits, psychoanalysis is available.
