Consultation &
Supervision
Becoming a mental health clinician isn’t a task to complete. Sure, finishing degrees and obtaining licenses are achievements and give us access to practice our craft. As we work we experience varying levels of feeling competent with understanding and helping others. However, like all people, clinicians are complex and subject to evolving needs. It’s why we call our work “practice” - I believe we are all lifelong students practicing to become.
Supervisors and colleagues have been incredibly helpful with my own difficult clinical situations and made enormous impacts on my therapeutic identity and style. I enjoy sharing what I’ve learned and facilitating growth with students and colleagues. Sometimes that takes the form of consultation, where a few meetings are all that’s needed to help move a case along and/or be a springboard for additional independent study and learning. Other times, an ongoing supervisory relationship is most useful. Supervision affords a deeper dive into clinical processes and can offer a kind of relational structure for clinicians to make more robust use of.
